John Horsewell

A lifetime of light, colour and the natural world.

Art was always in John Horsewell’s blood. Born in Essex into a family of professional artists — his parents and grandfather all painted — his love for art developed from the earliest age. At school he experimented with every medium available, before discovering that oils were best suited to his style, offering him the control and depth needed to capture the light and shadow he so desired.

On leaving school, Horsewell entered the world of interior design, continuing to paint in his spare time and exhibiting locally before his growing reputation took him to galleries across Manchester, Birmingham and London. In 1978, he made the decisive leap to pursue painting as a full-time profession — a decision that has brought him great and lasting success.

Horsewell’s work is rooted in the landscapes he loves most — from the sun-drenched vistas of Southern Europe to the tranquil shores of Florida, where he spends much of his time. Working with both brushes and palette knives, his paintings carry a distinctive texture and an unmistakable sense of place. The flair and joy with which he paints communicates the pleasure of each location, inviting the viewer to share in the experience.

Today, Horsewell continues to work from his studio on the Essex/Suffolk border, his technique ever evolving, his affection for the natural world as vivid as ever.
