Carrs Silver
Sheffield's Premier Silversmith Since 1977
Some cities make things, and then some cities make things beautifully. Sheffield is one of the latter — and Carrs Silver is among its finest expressions. Founded in 1977 by Ron Carr, a self-taught jeweller who left production engineering to follow his craft, Carrs has grown from a small workshop into one of Britain's most respected manufacturers of fine silverware, all without ever leaving the city that shaped it.
Today, from an 80,000 sq ft purpose-built facility on the outskirts of Sheffield, Carrs produces an extraordinary range of sterling silver pieces — photograph frames, cutlery, candlesticks, clocks, dresser sets, children's gifts and contemporary accessories — each one made start to finish in-house, by craftspeople who understand that silver is not merely a material, but a medium for memory.
A Heritage Built in Sheffield
Carrs' story is one of quiet, consistent excellence. In 1979, the company launched its first collection of silver photograph frames — pieces that would become its signature and its foundation. By the 1980s, those frames were gracing homes across the UK and beyond. By 1991, Carrs had earned a Queen's Award for Export Achievement, with products reaching quality retailers in over 50 countries.
In 1995, Carrs opened concessions in Harrods and Selfridges — two of London's most discerning retail institutions — cementing its place at the very top of British silverware. In 2009, the acquisition of the Osborne Group, a Sheffield cutlery producer with 300 years of pattern archives, made Carrs the UK's largest start-to-finish cutlery manufacturer. The Osborne brand was subsequently relaunched with its own dedicated concession in the Silver Room at Harrods.
Royal Warrants, Michelin Stars & Millennium Hallmarks
Few British manufacturers can claim a clientele quite like Carrs'. Their silverware has been commissioned for the Queen's royal visit to the Sultan of Oman's garden party, supplied to three-Michelin-star chef Clare Smyth for her landmark restaurant Core in London, and celebrated with a visit from HRH The Duke of Gloucester to the Sheffield factory. In 2002, Carrs won Brand of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards — recognition from an industry that does not give its accolades lightly.
Milestone moments in British history have been marked in Carrs silver: the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, the Millennium in 1999, the Golden Jubilee in 2002 — each commemorated with limited-edition pieces bearing the hallmarks of their era.
The Convention Mark: A Global Standard
Since 2021, all Carrs silver items carry the internationally recognised Convention Common Control Mark (CCM) — the hallmark of the Vienna Convention on Precious Metals, accepted across all signatory states. It is the first international hallmark, and its presence on every Carrs piece is a statement of provenance, purity and trust that travels as far as the silverware itself.
Now in Its Second Generation
In 2012, Andrew, Martin and Richard Carr — the founders' sons — took the helm, bringing fresh energy to a business built on enduring values. Under their stewardship, Carrs has expanded its collaborations (including a celebrated partnership with artist Stephen Winterburn), embraced e-commerce, and continued to develop new collections that honour the craft while speaking to contemporary taste.
At EB London, we are proud to offer the full breadth of the Carrs Silver collection — from classic sterling silver frames to fine cutlery, from children's keepsakes to statement table pieces. Each one is made in Sheffield. Each one made to last.
