Amelia Coward
Colour, Geometry & the Art of Interaction
Amelia Coward is one of Britain's most distinctive contemporary artists — a Kent-based maker whose work sits at the precise intersection of fine art, colour theory and textile craft. Born in 1975, she holds a First Class Honours from Central Saint Martins and a Master's from the Royal College of Art, two of the world's most demanding creative institutions. Her training was rigorous, her vision entirely her own.
Rooted in the colour theory teachings of Josef Albers, Amelia's practice is built around a single, endlessly fertile question: how do colours interact? Her works are carefully composed studies of spatial balance — geometric elements such as circles and stripes arranged with a precision that belies the warmth and energy they generate on the wall.
From Loom to Laser
Amelia's woven textile training is the quiet engine behind everything she makes. Where once she worked a loom, she now works a laser cutter — using it with the same discipline and intentionality, cutting geometric shapes and reassembling them in patchwork compositions that carry the logic of weaving into an entirely new medium.
The range of her output is striking. At one end: highly detailed dot pieces containing thousands of raised, hand-painted dots — works of extraordinary patience and tactile presence. At the other: large-scale striped pieces built from contrasting scales and bold, clashing colours that command a room. Between these poles lies a body of work that is consistently surprising and consistently coherent.
A Studio in a Kent Oast Barn
Amelia works from a traditional Oast Barn in the Kent countryside — a setting that feels entirely right for an artist whose practice is rooted in making, in the physical handling of materials, in the slow accumulation of detail. She is prolific, supported by a team of creative makers who help assemble, photograph, frame and pack each work to the standard her collectors expect.
Alongside her fine art practice, Amelia runs Bombus, her commercial giftware business — the two worlds informing and enriching each other in ways that keep both fresh.
At EB London, we are proud to represent Amelia Coward's work — art that rewards close looking, that changes with the light, and that brings genuine joy to the spaces it inhabits.
